My wishlist
I'm looking to acquire books across science fiction, fantasy and horror that are immediately immersive and crafted with intensity and grit, with a hearty helping of weirdness and sass.
My favourite books usually include off-kilter, quirky beats, whether that be in horror-, detective-, apocalyptic- or dystopian-inflected fantasy narratives, or ones voiced through a scathing, bitingly funny main character. I love stories that resist or merge genres like Fallout, The Lies of Locke Lamora or Lapvona, and I love to be equally as horrified as I am enchanted or amused while consuming any media.
In the traditional fantasy space, I'd love to find an epic series like those by Joe Abercrombie or John Gwynne – preferably with vikings/raiders/gods/warriors/anything medieval, with captivating landscapes and raw, strange, dark characters capable of anything. Or a more modern take on epic fantasy that explores geo-politics, especially climate-focused narratives such as the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. I also have a soft spot for the fantasy I grew up with, so I’d love to see novels like those by Ursula K Le Guin, or stories like Wolf Brother or The Wind Singer, either for a YA/crossover audience or (preferably) aged up.
In horror, generally I’d say the camper the better. I love 70s and 80s monster horror classics such as The Rats by James Herbert, as well as Grady Hendrix’s work, and more recent desire-infused horror-romances such as Butcher and Blackbird and Nosferatu. Where I’m not looking for camp is in books with disturbing social or eco horror elements – I adore speculative climate fiction in all its forms and I’d love to find a book like Juice by Tim Winton, Annihilation by Jeff VanDerMeer or a modern take on The Day of the Triffids.
And with regards to romantasy, if you hadn't already guessed, I'm not a cosy person – but I can be a romantic one if there's enough grit, defiance, sex or blood…
